European markets are gearing up for a quiet start to the week, with the ECB widely expected to leave rates unchanged but may hint at when it will start cutting, while investors will analyze the latest reading of the US inflation report. Markets will also have a chance to assess US PPI data and the minutes of the Fed's March meeting, while UK GDP data will be released at the end of the week. Fed speakers such as John Williams, Mary Daly and Raphael Bostic will also be speaking this week.

STOCKS TODAY: Asian stocks mostly higher as investors eye earnings, inflation signs

Asian stocks were mostly higher on Monday as investors looked ahead to earnings reports from top global companies and a consumer price report measuring U.S. inflation. "With risk sentiment bouncing back from earlier nervousness, gains are likely to remain somewhat limited as there may be some validating comments ahead of this week's key U.S. Consumer Price Index release," said Yeap Jun Rong, market analyst at IG. The U.S. government will release the March Consumer Price Report later this week.

US Dollar strengthens on hesitant Asian stocks as US non-performance data undermines Fed's rate cut expectations

Asian stocks started the week on a downbeat note and the dollar strengthened as investors weighed when the U.S. Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates after another blowout jobs report. Oil prices fell nearly 2% as tensions eased in the Middle East after Israel withdrew more soldiers from southern Gaza, while gold prices fell 1% after hitting a record high on Friday as U.S. Treasury yields continued to rise. "On the positive side, the resumption of growth suggests the economy is far from recession, but it could also mean the Fed will keep interest rates higher for longer".

Hong Kong leader says government considering more measures to boost stock market

Hong Kong leader Li Xiaoga said Monday that Hong Kong is considering more measures to support the securities market in the Asian financial center, which has been hit by China's economic slowdown and geopolitical tensions. Speaking at the HSBC Global Investment Summit in Hong Kong, Mr. Li said China has taken a series of measures, including improving the listing system for technology companies, to improve competitiveness. China's economy grew by just 3.2% in 2023 and capital flight made Hong Kong's stock market the worst performing major index last year.
