India, with more than 500 million WhatsApp users, is the largest market for the instant messaging service.

WhatsApp is testing Meta AI, a chatbot that uses its large language model microbe, with users in India and a number of other markets, signaling that it intends to capitalize on its large user base to expand its artificial intelligence offerings.

The company recently began testing the AI chatbot with some users in India, many of whom said the bot is currently only available in a limited number of markets, including the United States. With more than 500 million WhatsApp users, India is the largest market for the instant messaging service.

Meta confirmed the move in a statement." A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch, "Our AI generative quizzes are in various stages of development, and we're publicly testing a range of them to a limited extent.

In late September, Meta released Meta AI, a general purpose assistant designed to answer user questions directly in chat, and generate realistic images based on text prompts.

With a massive global user base of over 2 billion monthly active users, WhatsApp presents a very unique opportunity for Meta to expand its AI offerings. By integrating Meta AI into WhatsApp, the Facebook parent company can expose its advanced language modeling and image generation capabilities to a large audience, potentially dwarfing its competitors.

The company separately confirmed earlier this week that it will release Llama 3, the next version of its open source large-scale language model, next month.
