Last year, Microsoft made headlines for investing $13 billion in the creators of ChatGPT, but their relationship goes much deeper. Microsoft first took a stake in OpenAI back in 2019, and has been working on perfecting these digital assistants ever since. The result is Copilot, a suite of generative AI assistants deeply integrated into Microsoft's most widely used products.
Copilot for Microsoft 365 simplifies tasks such as summarizing and drafting email, preparing presentations, creating charts from spreadsheet data, and more - all with a few simple commands. But that's just the beginning.
GitHub Copilot automatically writes and debugs computer code. Copilot for Sales integrates with popular Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms to gather information, schedule meetings, and provide mass feedback, all from first-party customer data. Copilot for Service provides similar tools for customer service personnel to gather content from a vast array of resources - all controlled by simple voice or typed commands from the user.
Microsoft is still promoting these Copilots, so we don't yet know how they will affect the company's financial performance. Estimates range from $25 billion to $100 billion in annual revenue growth.
The company's current share price is 35 times forward sales. That sounds high, but it's an attractive valuation considering the huge potential ahead.
